Starting a new story can feel both thrilling and daunting. The blank page holds endless possibilities, but finding that initial spark of inspiration can sometimes be harder than it seems.

The good news? Inspiration is everywhere—you just have to know where to look. Whether it’s through exploration, observation, or quiet reflection, there are countless ways to ignite that creative flame. Here’s some ideas to help you find your inspiration and take the first steps toward writing your novel:

1. Explore New Places

One of the best ways to get your creative juices flowing is to step out of your usual routine and explore new places. Inspiration can strike when you least expect it, and often, a change of scenery is all it takes to spark an idea. Here are a few spots where you might find your story’s setting, characters, or plot twist:

Libraries and Bookstores

Libraries and bookstores are treasure troves of inspiration. Not only do they offer endless resources, but they’re also peaceful environments where you can immerse yourself in the world of storytelling. Take a stroll through the aisles, browse through different genres, or pick up a book you wouldn’t normally read. Even flipping through a random page can spark ideas for your own story.

Coffee Shops and Cafés

There’s something about the buzz of a coffee shop that can fuel creativity. The mix of people, sounds, and smells creates a unique atmosphere that can help you brainstorm or write. Bring a notebook or your laptop, grab a drink, and observe the world around you. You never know when an overheard conversation or a passing stranger might inspire your next character or plotline.

Parks and Nature Spots

Sometimes ideas come when you least expect them, and taking a break in nature can offer a fresh perspective on your writing. Whether it’s the calming rustle of leaves in a park or the quiet serenity of a hiking trail, outdoor settings can clear your mind and open you up to new ideas. Some of the best novel concepts come from observing the beauty (or chaos) of nature. If you’re stuck, try taking a walk or sitting in a garden—you might be surprised by what comes to you.

2. Draw from Personal Experiences

While exploring new places is a great way to find inspiration, you don’t have to go far to find ideas. Some of the most compelling stories come from personal experiences, emotions, or observations. Think about the people you know, the conversations you’ve had, or the challenges you’ve faced. These real-life moments can be the foundation for a great story.

Start with What You Know

Young writers often worry that they don’t have enough life experience to write compelling stories, but that’s far from true. Your unique perspective as a young person can bring fresh, authentic ideas to your story. Think about the situations you’ve encountered—friendships, school challenges, family dynamics—and consider how those experiences can shape the themes or conflicts in your novel.

Capture Emotions

One of the most powerful tools in a writer’s arsenal is emotion. Think back to a time when you felt a strong emotion—joy, fear, anger, or heartbreak—and write about it. Use that emotion as the basis for a scene or a character’s motivation. Readers connect with stories that feel genuine, and drawing from your own emotional experiences can make your writing more relatable and impactful.

3. Engage with Art and Media

Inspiration doesn’t have to come from life or nature—it can come from other forms of storytelling. Engaging with art, music, films, or other novels can help spark new ideas and push you in unexpected creative directions.

Watch Movies and TV Shows

Sometimes watching a well-crafted film or TV show can open your eyes to new ways of telling a story. Pay attention to the pacing, the dialogue, or the way characters are developed. Ask yourself what you would have done differently. If a certain scene resonates with you, try to break down why it worked and how you can apply that to your own writing.

Listen to Music

Music can be a powerful source of inspiration. Try creating a playlist that captures the mood or tone of your story, or simply listen to your favorite songs while brainstorming. The lyrics of a song might inspire a scene, while the rhythm could help you develop the pacing of your novel.

Visit Art Galleries or Museums

Visual art can offer a different perspective on storytelling. If you have access to an art gallery or museum, spend some time absorbing the works on display. A painting, sculpture, or photograph might spark an idea for a setting, character, or theme in your story. This is actually how I got the idea for the opening scene of my own novel!

Today's Location Highlight

When I first started working on my novel, I visited this historical mansion in Northeast Ohio to get inspiration for my fantasy story's setting. Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is the perfect place to feel like you've been transported back in time!

Check out this video of my experience in the mansion's gardens from my TikTok, @alexarae_writes.
